Duchess Sophie Embarks on Landmark Zambia Visit to Strengthen UK-Zambia Relations

The Duchess of Edinburgh, wife of Prince Edward, quietly arrived in Zambia on Monday, September 14, to begin her six-day official visit, with the initiative announced publicly on September 15. The visit comes at the request of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and represents an agenda-setting diplomatic engagement for the British Royal Family. During her time in the southern African nation, Sophie will undertake a comprehensive programme of engagements spanning three major locations: Lusaka, Lower Zambezi, and Livingstone. Her itinerary emphasizes shared interests between the UK and Zambia, including gender equality, climate and nature conservation, and education and research partnerships—all subjects the duchess is deeply passionate about. The duchess made a striking impression upon arrival, wearing a bright green midi dress coordinated with a purple sash, a thoughtful choice that reflected the primary green of the Zambian flag. In Lusaka, Sophie will meet with President Hichilema at Community House, while in Livingstone she will visit Mosi-oa-Tunya, one of the seven wonders of the natural world, where she will lay a posy at the WWI memorial. The duchess is also expected to engage with educators, business and community leaders, healthcare workers, artists, and conservationists, highlighting the breadth of collaboration between the two nations. This visit celebrates the longstanding friendship and connections between Zambia and the UK, and marks the duchess's second visit to Zambia, having previously visited in 2014.
